Résumé

The change in system performance by the drop-in replacement of refrigerant R-134a with R-1234yf in a 500-ton US Navy chiller was evaluated using a thermodynamic model, with a physics-based compressor model. Prior studies on this topic have used idealized or empirical compressor models. System performance was found to decrease in terms of coefficient of performance (COP). The overall annual energy costs of the systems were also compared, and it was found that it would cost 39% more energy to use R-1234yf instead of R-134a. Additionally, the physics-based compressor model predicted a 23% lower annual energy consumption with R-134a than the idealized model used in prior works. Because retrofitting R-134a shipboard chillers would be expensive, the cost to retrofit and the payout of improved performance would need to be weighed against the increased cost of energy and the change in carbon emissions.
