Résumé

This work analyzes and identifies the best void fraction correlations to predict pressure drop in the two-phase flow of R1234yf in smooth, adiabatic horizontal pipes. To achieve this aim, a physical-empirical model is developed, which implicitly considers the solution of the continuity, momentum, and energy balance equations in the fluid flow. The arrangement of the liquid and vapor phases in two-phase flow is predicted using 50 void fraction correlations reported in the literature, which are necessary to predict the velocities of both the liquid and vapor. Then, three proposals for the two-phase multiplier friction factor are evaluated: Friedel, Müller-Steinhagen & Heck, and Xu & Fang to satisfy the momentum equation. The results shown select the best void fraction classification for internal tube diameters of 3.2–8.0 mm, mass flow rates of 200–400 kg m−2 s−1, and saturation temperatures of 20 and 30 𝑜𝐶. The void fraction correlations of Bestion, Premoli et al., Lockhart and Martinelli, and Rouhani and Axelsson II, together with the correlation of Friedel, yielded the best results when compared with experimental data, providing the most consistent selection of empirical coefficients.
