Résumé

The current selection process for refrigerants is based on carefully balanced criteria regarding technical, economic and environmental aspects. However, the urgency of the climate crisis creates a value shift: Sustainability is a megatrend, creating new requirements for businesses. Due to the climate and environmental impact of fluorinated refrigerants, new considerations regarding refrigerant selection need to be made. Political and legal contexts are becoming a significant design criteria and decision-making factor for all market participants. In the form of stricter climate and environmental legislation and rising climate litigation, these new aspects are influencing the corporate strategy of businesses. The consequence will be that the most sustainable refrigerants will also constitute the lowest business risk in regards to availability, cost and legal actions and additionally offer the opportunity of competitive advantages for early-adapting businesses. Switching to non-fluorinated refrigerants will be the ‘win-win-win’ situation for people, the planet and lastly profit.
