Résumé

Fugitive emissions, particularly methane and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), pose critical environmental and economic challenges, contributing to climate change and potentially leading to regulatory penalties. Effective Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) programs are essential for minimizing these emissions and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of industrial facilities. Traditional LDAR approaches often rely on periodic manual inspections, especially downstream, which can be time-consuming, costly, and prone to human error, resulting in delayed leak identification and increased operational risks.
In response to these challenges, Chiyoda Corporation, a world-leading engineering firm , EPC contractor and O&M service provider, is pioneering Smart LDAR technology that integrates engineering data, advanced gas leak detection devices, 3D digital twin software, and robotic platforms. This innovative system employs the latest detection equipment, such as Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) cameras or Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) sensors, enabling real-time, high-accuracy detection and quantification of methane and VOC emissions. By developing a comprehensive LDAR database that incorporates vital emission data, the system facilitates prioritized repair scheduling and optimized inspection routing.
Initial demonstrations at Chiyoda Corporation’s SPERA Hydrogen demonstration plant in Japan have shown promising results in effectively detecting and quantifying fugitive emissions without requiring proximity to potential emission sources, which were integrated with the 3D digital twin as an operation management system. The proposed technology, named 3DLeakSightTM, not only improves operational efficiency through proactive maintenance strategies but also ensures compliance with evolving regulations, including US EPA and EU methane strategy.
Future developments aim to enhance this system further by integrating fully autonomous robots for continuous high-precision monitoring, particularly in hazardous or hard-to-access environments. This advancement promises to improve LDAR program efficiency, enhance operator safety, and contribute to environmental sustainability while delivering significant economic benefits. This innovative approach to leak detection and repair addresses the pressing issue of fugitive emissions and aligns with broader goals of regulatory compliance and economic efficiency across various sectors, particularly in Oil & Gas.
