Défis et opportunités liés à l'introduction d'un réfrigérateur abordable pour l'Afrique.

Challenges and opportunities in the introduction of an affordable refrigerator for Africa.

Numéro : 1120

Auteurs : TANSLEY I.

Résumé

The challenges to establishing the provision of cold storage in Sub Saharan Africa are many and varied, at the heart of them all is affordability. Conventional refrigerators although apparently cheap offer a poorly matched solution. Utilising weak grids and solar power requires different design strategies and sustainability requires strong support at the point of use. A radical new approach is needed which also opens up the opportunity to lower the impact of the supply chain and improve affordability by using novel and innovative engineering and business models. Solar power eliminates recurrent electricity costs and ensures the energy supply is clean. Innovative funding mechanisms open opportunities for income generation and growth even for the smallest retailer
The author is addressing these issues through centring their organisation in Africa. This paper talks about the experiences and learnings of introducing a low climate impact refrigerator into this market and the usercentred approach taken.
