Résumé

The New South Wales (NSW) Technical and Further Education Commission (TAFE), supported by the NSW Government’s Climate Change Fund, commissioned CSIRO and Air Conditioning Industries to design and construct a novel two-rotor, intercooled, solar desiccant cooling system for airconditioning commercial kitchens at the TAFE Hamilton Campus. The once-through airconditioning system pre-conditions 2 x 2100 l/s of fresh air, with a cooling capacity of approximately 80kW. Heat for regenerating the desiccant wheel is obtained from 400m2 of flat plate solar collectors. A range of designs were considered for cooling the kitchens. Given that the kitchens require a once through fresh air supply and room temperatures do not need to be tightly controlled, it was decided that solar desiccant cooling could provide an attractive solution. It was also noted that flat plate solar collectors are widespread and relatively inexpensive in Australia. Results are presented from initial operation of the system in winter heating mode.
