A valveless, flat plate solar ice maker was developed on the basis of previous research achievements in a large number of experiments and theoretical analysis. There are no valves and measure gauges installed on this advanced device, and no moving parts; activated carbon and methanol are used as working pairs for this valveless solar ice maker. Experimental results under both indoor and outdoor conditions showed that each subsystem, such as the adsorbent bed, the condenser and the evaporator, demonstrated a good performance on system running processes; this valveless solar ice maker prototype is close to practical application in mass production from cost and technological viewpoints. After the successful study of this valveless solar icemaker, two new improved economic solar ice makers were fabricated for mass application in China. This will accelerate the practical application of solid adsorption refrigeration driven by solar energy.
