Résumé

Weather data is one of the key factors considered in the evaluation and selection of the appropriate building simulation intended to be used. The most widely used simulation programs use weather data files that represent the local climatic conditions for certain locations to simulate the response of the building relative to this location. This paper investigates the weather data file for Cairo, aiming to check these data to be used in thermal simulation analyses for dwellings in Cairo. A preliminary investigation and field measurements have been carried out for two dwellings in one of the new communities around Cairo. External temperatures were recorded for two periods in autumn 2008 and summer 2009. Thermal simulation (Design-Builder) was used to simulate a reference building represents the real case using weather file of Cairo (ETMY weather file of Cairo International Airport, WMO station No. 623660). The recorded external temperatures were then used to validate the weather file proposed to be used in simulation. This study is a part of a larger project that is investigating the thermal behavior of new housing communities around Cairo so that architects, designers and engineers can be given sustainable design guidelines to enable appropriate solutions to be chosen at the early stages of a design to achieve low energy thermal comfort.
