Résumé

Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and occupant health has been associated with many factors including ventilation, thermal conditions, indoor air pollutants, and noise. Improving energy efficiency of buildings can affect all these factors, but knowledge on this topic is very limited. In this study, a total of 15 multi-family buildings from Eastern Finland were selected as case and control buildings. We will assess factors that affect IEQ, as well as occupants’ self-reported health and satisfaction with IEQ before and after energy efficiency improvements. Methods include continuous measurements of temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide and monoxide, and (in some buildings) particulate matter, as well as housing quality and health questionnaires and diaries for occupants. Occupants can answer the questionnaires and diaries via the Internet, paper questionnaire, or interviews. The results of the measurements, questionnaires, and diaries will be combined and used to assess the effects of energy efficiency on IEQ and occupant health and to develop a consistent assessment methodology.
