Résumé

The off-peak power pricing policy in China is introduced. Simulations of various off-peak operating models for refrigerated warehouses, using stored products as the thermal mass, reveal that power costs can be reduced by as much as 48.5%. From a survey of 20 plants, although some warehouses have used this strategy for several years, one third has not used it. The maximum resulting temperature variation is 5°C below the design temperature, but no adverse impact on food quality due to temperature cycling has been found. Analysis of annual hourly temperatures in Xiamen shows that the seasonal variation in wet bulb temperature difference between day and night is 1.2-1.8°C. Simulation results indicate that the COPs of refrigeration plants will be improved by 1.6-2.92% in different seasons, due to lower wet bulb temperatures at night. Adoption of thermal energy storage strategies will benefit not only refrigerated warehouses, but also the national grid.
