Fan-rating tests are conducted in standardized configurations that are rarely reproduced exactly in the field. In most actual installations, the connections between the fan and the system will have a disruptive effect, called a system effect (SE), on the flow condition at the fan inlet and outlet. The effect of these flow disturbances will usually be significantly greater than the pressure losses due to friction in the system components involved.
