Résumé

Few studies concerning outdoor thermal comfort in northern China have been conducted. Using microclimatic monitoring and subject interviews in a park in Tianjin, China, this study investigated outdoor thermal comfort under different climate conditions. Thermal sensation and overall comfort vary with the seasons. “Slightly warm” was perceived as the most comfortable in the cold season, “neutral” in shoulder seasons, and “slightly cool” in the hot season. Preferences in solar radiation, wind speed, and relative humidity were related to air temperature. The higher the air temperature is, the higher the wind speed, the lower the solar radiation, and the lower the relative humidity desired by residents, and vice versa. The preferred air temperature in Tianjin was around 19 °C. The seniors in our investigation typically wore more clothes in the cold and shoulder seasons to compensate for their decreased metabolic rate. Our research has provided a database in northern China that can be used to better understand outdoor thermal comfort.
