Experimental investigation of a novel transcritical CO2 heat pump for space heating and performance comparison with an R404A heat pump

As a natural refrigerant, CO2 has tremendous potential for the air-source heat pump application. However, the transcritical CO2 ASHP in space heating application is restricted by the high feed water temperature which is higher than the transcritical temperature of CO2. In this paper, a novel transcritical CO2 ASHP prototype was built up to implement the space heating application of transcritical CO2 ASHP and the experiments were carried out at fixed dry-bulb temperature of -20°C, -10°C and 0°C with supply water temperature varying from 45°C to 55°C. The simulation study was nearly consistent with the experimental results. A performance comparison between the novel transcritical CO2 ASHP and an R404A ASHP were also carried out. At a fixed dry-bulb temperature of -20°C, the COP of the novel transcritical CO2 ASHP increased as much as 3.4% with supply water temperature varying from 45°C to 55°C, while that of R404A ASHP showed a 16.5% reduction as water supply temperature varies between 45°C and 50°C. The comparison results indicated that the novel transcritical CO2 ASHP could be used for space heating efficiently in low dry-bulb temperature range and it had better performance when the bulb temperature range and it had better performance when the supply water temperature was 50°C or higher.
