Résumé

An arrangement of tubes aligned horizontally is the main type of ice-on-tube ice storage tanks. The arrangement rationality is generally dictated by equipment designation. The understanding of the characteristics of ice formation around the tubes is helpful for optimizing design. The authors studied the behaviour of ice formation around the tubes in an arrangement of nine tubes aligned horizontally in a rectangular container, and the interaction among the tubes. The results show that the beginning of water freezing around the middle tubes is later than for other tubes due to the effects induced by natural convection when the initial water temperature in the test section is high. The developing of an ice layer around the middle tube is superior than around the upper and lower tubes and is demonstrated by comparing the volume of ice formed around the central row tubes. If the water freezing around all tubes occurs simultaneously after the beginning of the cooling storage process, the non-dimensional temperature could be taken as a property to estimate the increasing rate of ice formation around the tubes. The smaller the non-dimensional temperature is, the quicker the ice layer increases around the tubes.
