Résumé

Developing countries face an important and unique challenge under the Montreal Protocol to protect the ozone layer: what should be done with the millions of existing domestic and commercial refrigerators and freezers that use ozone-depleting CFC refrigerants? Can appliance owners in developing countries continue to use their existing refrigerators and freezers but at the same time protect the ozone layer by retrofitting the equipment to use non-CFC refrigerants? The study is divided into two parts: a desk survey to review all existing literature available on experiences with hydrocarbons when used as replacements in existing domestic/small commercial refrigeration systems; a country specific survey to assess the particular experiences in three selected countries of Costa Rica, Cuba and Indonesia, where various hydrocarbon (and LPG) technology related programs in this particular application area were known to have been active in recent years. The book is completed by a report of a workshop held during the celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Montreal Protocol, in Montreal on September 1997, and a synthesis report that ties each of the elements together.
