Résumé

The use of low GWP refrigerants is rapidly expanding, and the focus on reducing climate changing emissions is now very much turning to system energy efficiency, as once the refrigerant GWP is <300, the benefits of mandating the use of ever lower GWP refrigerants are insignificant compared to the benefits of improving energy efficiency. Often the perceived additional initial cost of adding energy saving features to systems was a deterrent, but the focus on energy efficiency is changing this attitude. This paper presents the results of a theoretical study comparing energy efficiency and life cycle costs the low GWP R-454C refrigerant, using several different refrigerant subcooling architectures suitable for small supermarkets and cold stores, in two different geographical locations representing moderate and hot European climates. The results from the subcooler architectures are also compared to typical R-744 systems under the same operating conditions.
