Résumé

Ice aggregation on plates and tubes in heat exchangers and surrounding components is an important issue both in sustainable refrigeration and heat pump applications. Ice leads to reduced efficiency by directly altering the thermal conductivity conditions. Furthermore, increasing pressure losses due to blocking of the flow cross-sections affect the achievable heat transfer significantly. Therefore it is of utmost importance to understand the onset of ice aggregation and its dependence on relative humidity, flow speed, turbulent structures in the flow and both the surrounding and the plate temperature. To study the onset of ice aggregation, a wind tunnel is constructed. The wind tunnel flow patterns are characterized using PIV and CTA analyzing the turbulence structures. High speed and thermo-camera visualisation is used to monitor the icing onset. The results will provide the base for numerical ice-onset simulations, which will be capable of predicting onset-times and ice-thickness estimations leading to energy efficient designs.
