Résumé

In investigations of polymer composites for tribological applications in cryogenic environments, thermal shock cycles were performed on pin samples to localise possible damages due to different thermal stresses in composites. The experiments were carried out with PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylen) matrix composites in LN2 and in LHe. The samples were examined before and after the experiments with atomic force microscopy, to determine the effect of temperature shocks on the topography of the composite. Results of these experiments show debonding of the short fibres and fillers from the matrix, depending on the material and the experimental process chosen.
