Résumé

R-23 has been the main refrigerant used in ultra-low temperature refrigeration (ULT) applications, either as a single component or as a blend with R-116 forming R-508A or R-508B. All these options have very high global warming potential but the search for alternatives that can provide similar operating characteristics and performance with a lower GWP has been difficult. R-23 is used in the low temperature stage of the cascade refrigeration cycle of ULT freezer units in intermodal containers that are commonly used for vaccine or tuna storage and transportation. R-473A has been proposed as an option for ULT applications with a GWP of less than 2000.
This paper investigates the experimental evaluation of a ULT container cascade refrigeration system that utilizes R-134a in the high temperature stage and R-23 in the low temperature stage. Different ambient temperatures are evaluated with the baseline system before replacing the low stage refrigerant with the lower GWP option R-473A. Relative performance and operational characteristics will be discussed.
