Résumé

Current concerns for reducing energy consumption, associated with the development of solutions that allow stronger air purification, have resulted in the need to understand the impact of different percentages of the outside air flow in HVAC systems. When it comes to surgery rooms in hospital facilities, this issue takes on a major importance. This study regards the work done to verify and quantify the energy savings related to air recirculation, and to determine the optimal percentage of fresh air, in HVAC solutions for this kind of facility. It also shows the possibilities of optimizations, developed through a dynamic management of the percentage of fresh air (hourly) and through a standby equipment configuration (reduced air flow) in non-operating periods, while maintaining the required indoor air-quality conditions. The energy consumption was analysed, for a typical operating room in several cities across Portugal, for their representative role in Portuguese climate variety. This analysis was accomplished by a simplified method, developed in a worksheet form, in order to intentionally avoid the use of complex energy simulation software. Nevertheless, this method has been validated by comparing the energetic consumptions with accredited results from energy simulations. It was found that the energy saving possibilities, when using air recirculation, were between 50% and 84%, depending on the type of surgery rooms. Also, the results show that when resorting to air recirculation, the ideal proportion of fresh air doesn’t correspond to the minimum recommended by regulations, and may ascend to double the fresh air flow.
