Experimental evaluation of CO2 cycles under different expansion strategies.

Résumé

This study focuses on the analysis of CO2 thermodynamic cycles for the light commercial refrigeration sector, which requires relatively simple solutions since the products are usually space and cost constrained. The effect of the refrigerant charge was firstly explored and it was found that the relationship between the charge and the system performance is strongly dependent on the cycle architecture, i.e., with or without an internal heat exchanger. The influence of two different expansion devices, namely a capillary tube and a thermostatic valve, was also explored under variable thermal load and ambient temperature. It was show that due to their contrasting influence over superheating and discharge pressure the system coefficient of performance is almost unaffected by the expansion device used.
