Résumé
Carbon dioxide (CO2) has successfully been used as a refrigerant in the low-temperature circuits of cascade refrigeration systems, as a phase-changing secondary fluid in secondary loop systems, and in transcritical direct expansion systems. Transcritical CO2 refrigeration systems tend to be more popular in moderate climates such as Northern Europe where these systems operate a majority of the time in the more efficient subcritical mode. However, a recent study by Sharma et al. indicates that the transcritical CO2 booster system could perform well in the northern two-thirds of the USA. In order to determine the effectiveness of transcritical CO2 refrigeration systems for US supermarket applications, a laboratory-scale transcritical CO2 refrigeration system was constructed. The system consists of a compressor rack, medium-temperature and low-temperature display cases, medium-temperature and low-temperature false loads, and an air-cooled gas cooler. In addition, the system has been approved for use in the USA. The laboratory-scale refrigeration system has been installed in temperature and humidity controlled environmental chambers and the performance of the system has been evaluated under a wide range of operating conditions. The performance of the transcritical CO2 system is compared to a standard multiplex direct expansion system evaluated under similar operating conditions.
