Résumé

Reducing the impact of refrigeration systems is crucial to environmental sustainability. Therefore, lower global warming potential (GWP < 250) refrigerants are a priority. As R-404A is a higher GWP mainstream refrigerant, characterization of mildly flammable (class A2L) potential replacements was performed for this study. Examination of system properties, such as pressures, capacities, COPs, and mass flow rates was completed. Soft-optimized testing was also conducted, including minor equipment changes.
Results are given for XL40 (R-454A), XL20 (R-454C), R-455A, and R-459B. Equipment testing in a commercial refrigerator shows that A2Ls are viable alternatives to R-404A, with similar-to-better performance achieved with relatively minor system changes. lubricant effects on compressor performance were also examined. Safety considerations for use of A2Ls in new ACR equipment is also discussed, with regards to recently developed / in-process international standards work.
