Résumé
What is believed to be one of the largest, if not the largest, dry expansion ammonia refrigerating plant in the Southern Hemisphere was commissioned in June 2022 in Melbourne, Australia. This paper describes the refrigeration system design, the recorded energy performances, and the general operating experiences of the system for the first few months of operation. The employment of a combination of screw compressors and reciprocating compressors in dual stage compression mode is a relatively uncommon feature compared with the thirty or so other dry expansion ammonia systems that the author has discussed in previous technical papers. This enables a more direct energy performance comparison with liquid overfeed systems featuring similar compressor configurations. In turn this enables a realistic assessment of the energy performance penalties, if any, associated with “contaminating” the suction line networks with relatively high-density liquefied refrigerant. The refrigerated volume of the distribution centre described is around 248,000 m3. The floor area is approximately 23,300 m2. The low/medium temperature refrigeration capacities are 885/358 kW respectively. Of this, the blast freezing refrigeration capacity represents 379 kW corresponding to a daily blast freezing capacity of 181 metric tons of packaged meat products. The operating ammonia inventory in all evaporators combined is approximately 40 kg. The total ammonia inventory is approximately 1000 kg as charged. The paper compares the energy performance prediction with the actual energy performance recorded. A comparison between the energy consumption of this dry expansion system compared with other similar systems employing liquid overfeed will also be shown.
