Résumé
The concept of and the term sustainability has been used inflationary for a number of years now. Various products, initiatives, research programs, scientific publications and also laws and directives use this qualifier. Sustainability and sustainable economy have become one of the central themes of today’s society; industry and individual businesses also commit themselves to it. However, the goal of sustainability is applied to such a multitude of processes, products, and systems that harmonisation and measurability are difficult to achieve.
For this reason, the definition of sustainability is elaborated upon, and additionally, the precautionary principle is presented. It is important to underline their increasing impact for refrigeration technology, for example for the comparison of: business risks vs. opportunities, innovative technology leadership vs. the role of market follower, short-term quarterly profit optimization vs. long-term investment security, anticipatory compliance with expected laws and regulations vs. bans, energy-efficiency optimized refrigeration systems vs. cost leadership. Finally, also the comparison of thermodynamic processes and, in case of the Carnot-cycle, the selection and comparison of refrigerant working fluids.
It is explained how sustainability and more precise a sustainable development can be assessed. Evaluation criteria and factors are suggested, and options and tools are also described that enable assessing and measuring the sustainability of refrigerants, products, developments, business models and sustainable management. Examples show how a sustainability assessment can be implemented.
