Résumé

Entrances in supermarkets are an aspect of uncontrolled ventilation, where airflow is determined by door sizes, positions and the frequency of use. The current practices to limit uncontrolled ventilation through doors in food supermarkets are to construct a wind lobby at the front of the store and/or to install an air curtain behind the main doors to provide aerodynamic sealing; limited information is available on the effectiveness of either solutions. To quantify the uncontrolled ventilation penetrating the store, Tinytag data loggers were installed in a store with both solutions at different locations to measure vertical and horizontal temperature distribution. This approach provides an estimate of the amount of uncontrolled ventilation and its effect on the energy consumption. The studied store has an approximate sales area of 5000 m2 but the focus at this stage is at the front of the store due to concerns in relation to the wind lobby. Data loggers installed in the lobby at 1.1 and 2.2 m and inside the store at 1 and 2.2 m height. Temperature analysis for the month of February 2012 reveals that in the vicinity of the entrance\ exit doors, the temperature at upper sensors was higher than the lower sensors by over 3 °C for a considerable percentage of the time. Similar temperature differences were found in the middle of the lobby. These findings indicate that, when doors are open, there is significant air exchange due to wind speed and internal and external temperature differences. Preliminary Computation Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis indicates that when the wind velocity is at 1 m/s, the air-curtain is influencing airflow inside the lobby.
