Résumé

Field measurements of performance of refrigeration and air-conditioning plants has been unusual as they were considered to complex and costly. Today energy efficiency is becoming a strategic question for many equipment owners as economic, environmental and political drivers result in a new focus at the same time as reliability is becoming ever more important. Many consultants and contractors are still new to equipment owner’s move from a short term low cost focus to a more long term operational cost perspective and lack competence and equipment to offer validation of performance. The introduction of cost effective performance analysing methods and increasing market for energy optimisation projects is a business opportunity not a threat to the industry. The importance of developing analysing methods and means to communication of results between experts and equipment owners are increasing in importance. The two projects described in this paper are developing new methodologies for analysing and optimisation. The first project develop the fundamentals of SEI (System Efficiency Index) to be used for field measurements, a powerful tool to describe the performance of virtually any refrigeration system as an efficiency versus an ideal process at the same operating condition making it nearly independent of operating conditions. SEI can also divided in sub-efficiencies allowing the losses to be allocated to the components of the system as sub efficiencies for compressor, condenser, evaporator, cycle auxiliary loads. Field measurements can with SEI be benchmarked versus design, state of the art and other measurements and facilitates clear easy to understand communication of complex data to the equipment owner. The second project is “COOL-SAVE” an EU project investigating energy saving potential for 25 plants in EU’s “Food and drink Industry”. On-site performance measurements implementing SEI and “energy profiling” were used to establish the baseline performance and cost effective measures. A guide for optimisation of industrial plants was developed. Experiences from SEI based performance analysing on different types of equipment is presented high-lighting the usefulness and potential to save 10-30% of energy in existing plants.
