Résumé

Conduction plays a major role when it comes to the thermal load through the walls of refrigerators. However, when the cabinet is installed within some furniture, the buoyancy-induced air flow can increase the heat transfer depending on the gap between surfaces. Radiation may also contribute negatively, depending on the surface material and treatment. Thus, the present work is aimed at investigating the confinement and radiation effects on the thermal load of built-in refrigerators. To this end, a mathematical model was proposed and validated against experimental data with errors lower than 10% for the heat load. The analysis revealed that conduction through the air gap may take place if the spacing is drastically reduced, increasing the heat load. On the other hand, for sufficiently large spacings the thermal load is not affected. The results showed that the gap and the radiation effects can increase the thermal load by 6% and 7%, respectively.
