Heat transfer and air flow in domestic refrigerators.

Résumé
The work was carried out in order to study heat transfer by natural convection in a domestic refrigerator (without ventilation). Two configurations were investigated: empty refrigerator with and without shelves. Both experimental and numerical approaches were used. Simulations using CFD software were undertaken supposing a constant evaporator temperature and laminar 3D-flow. Air temperature and velocity fields are shown. It was found that the warm zone is located at the top of the refrigerator and the cold zone at the bottom. The air temperature obtained from simulations is compared with the experimental values. Good agreement was obtained, particularly at the bottom of the refrigerator. However, the model overpredicted the air temperature at the top. This may relate to the fact that heat transfer by radiation has not been taken into account in the model. It was observed that the presence of shelves in the refrigerator contributed to a slight increase of air temperature compared with that without shelves.
