Résumé

Ammonia is one of the natural refrigerants along with water, air, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons. Ammonia has been an important refrigerant for over a century applied first to the refrigeration of foods and ice making. It is an efficient refrigerant, low in cost, and has certain physical and thermodynamic advantages. Also, because of its odour, ammonia is self-alerting in the event of a leak. Along with its many advantages, has one major drawback, the low concentrations in air that constitute toxic levels. Ammonia received a new lease on life because it does not deplete the ozone layer and does not contribute to global warming.
