Résumé

This paper describes some of the unusual chemical and physical properties of ammonia. It explains why they have a beneficial effect when ammonia is used as a refrigerant and it includes some calculated examples. An overview of recent changes in legal requirements is given, and the paper concludes with a review of recent technical developments and the future possibilities for new technology and new applications.
