La dynamique des fluides numérisée dans l'industrie ferroviaire : confort, simulation et optimisation de la gestion thermique.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the railroad industry: comfort, simulation and thermal management optimization.

Résumé

In the railroad industry, CFD has found its way into various areas of the development process. An overview is given on two particular fields of application - comfort simulation and thermal management in tunnels. Passenger comfort is mostly determined by air velocity and temperature distribution. Consequently the flow field in the entire passenger compartment is solved. This also requires modelling and simulation of the ducting system to provide accurate inlet boundary conditions. During this process the ducts are optimized in terms of pressure drop and velocity distribution. Strategies to obtain reliable simulation results are outlined as well as a number of examples presented. In tunnels, especially if the train is halted, thermal management of heat produced by AC units, brake resistors and other sources become crucial. Local temperature rise has to be limited to ensure proper operation of AC units. CFD is used to investigate different AC design and tunnel ventilation concepts.
