Résumé

Engineers and consultants in the European Union are challenged to design energy efficient new or retrofitted buildings as part of the EU’s clear and aggressive policy goal of an energy efficient future. AHRI’s third-party equipment performance certification may help the EU reach this goal despite ambiguity and confusion about how to define an energy efficient building. To combat this confusion, consulting/specifying engineers and builders must choose indoor climate systems based on best practices, and proven, reliable data. In order to promote energy efficiency while being economical in both the initial investment and over the life of the building, such choices need to be informed ones that rest on readily available accepted and respected performance data that are credible to the building owners, and, increasingly, to governmental regulators. By specifying equipment from manufacturers who use industry standards and participate in industry-driven performance certification programs, engineers and specifiers can assure both residential and commercial consumers of product performance. AHRI’s performance verification program is an example of a First Best Practice that offers clear direction in a confusing milieu.
