Résumé
A comprehensive review of the physical properties of ice slurries with a propylene glycol additive is presented. A formerly published perturbation method, used to calculate the heat transfer to cylindrical tubes, was adapted to Cartesian coordinates and then applied to calculate this phenomenon in rectangular channels. Related experiments - with a rectangular heat exchanger - were performed to obtain results on the heat transfer coefficients (Nusselt numbers). The experimentally determined temperature profiles show an interesting effect of partial heating of the multicomponent fluid ice slurry. This non-equilibrium phenomenon is analysed and discussed in detail. The perturbation method is valid only for small heat transfer rates. A comparison between numerical and experimental results is presented. The results show limits of an application of the perturbation analysis. Experimental results are compared with the work of other authors, showing good agreement for the local Nusselt numbers over the entire length of the heat exchanger. Experiences made with the perturbation method lead to information to construct the full solution model, valid for arbitrary heat transfer rates.
