Résumé

The predominant alternative refrigerant for air conditioners in non-Article 5 countries which have almost completed the HCFC phase-out is R-410A. Whilst most non-Article 5 countries (under the Montreal Protocol) have for mostly temperate climates, many Article 5 countries experience extremely high ambient temperatures. This is considered to pose potential problems when switching from HCFC-22 to R-410A as the critical point of the latter is considerably lower, thus the implication of a greater drop off in efficiency and capacity at higher condensing temperatures compared to HCFC-22. For this reason, many countries and enterprises are considering the use of hydrocarbon refrigerants such as HC-290 for room air conditioners. The present work addresses the performance of an HCFC-22 and HC-290 split type air conditioner specifically at high ambient temperatures. The result for the HC-290 equipment tested shows no notable degradation in cooling capacity or efficiency compared to the HCFC-22 model.
