Résumé
The Flannery Centre is a recently constructed multiuse educational and office building located in Bathurst on the tablelands of New South Wales. It has been designed to make full use of the opportunities inherent in the regional climate through passive design features. This approach, in combination with appropriate technology and control, aims to achieve an appropriate level of thermal comfort with low energy consumption. The Flannery Centre was awarded a 6 Star Green Star (Education) design rating. The cold and dry Bathurst climate provides unique opportunities to customise the servicing to match the opportunities and challenges of the local environment. The unique design response to this environment was the use of an underfloor, evaporatively cooled VAV system for space conditioning throughout the office and teaching areas of the building, which is the central topic of this paper. The building is complete and has been in use since April 2012. In that time, although subject to some heating equipment challenges, the Flannery Centre has already shown a level of energy use far below similar centres in the same climate zone. The application of this type of technology in the broader Australian environment is discussed, identifying the range of building types and locations for which this approach appears viable.
