Résumé
When receiving and storing LNG with various densities in the tanks at LNG terminals, these different density levels could lead to LNG stratification and might cause rollover in the worst-case. To mitigate such rollover risk, it is important to properly manage the receiving method such as checking the
density differences between Heel LNG and filling LNG, its volume and which filling nozzle (top and/or bottom) should be used.
In recent years, as the result of increasing LNG trading and needs to secure competitive price LNG, diversified sources of LNG have brought the situation where LNG terminals are required to receive various density of LNG in limited tank capacity like a single tank. Under these circumstances, more than ever, how to store LNG with significant different compositions and densities in the same tank became essential for effective use of the limited tank capacity of LNG terminals which enhance the LNG players’ competitiveness.
Tokyo Gas has developed a simulation model of LNG-mixing inside LNG tanks using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the simulation which is being continuously improved is utilized to predict LNG mixing condition enabling the receiving of LNG in a broader density range.
The feature of this simulation model is coming from improvement through comparison and verification with actual data obtained from Tokyo Gas's extensive LNG receiving experience for more than 50 years. Noteworthy point is reflecting actual mixing phenomena observed by our developed
and specialized LNG tank internal observation device. By incorporating these observation result and actual data, this simulation has been improved in its accuracy. Specifically, it is not well known that the presence of bubbles entrained in the received LNG and its role of enhancing mixing, however,
our camera caught the phenomenon and we reflect it to our simulation precisely.
Leveraging this mixing simulation to enable LNG receiving under various conditions contributes to enhance Tokyo Gas's competitiveness.
This report shows our superb simulation techniques and the comparison results of density distribution in actual LNG receiving.
