Résumé
Refueling an orbiter transfer vehicle in orbit requires accurate sensing of tank fuel levels. To establish an effective technique for measuring liquid volume under the micro-gravity conditions, the authors had attempted to apply a Helmholtz resonance technique to cryogens. The technique is capable of measuring the volume of any liquid shape. It is an effective method for measuring liquid volumes that assume variable shapes under the micro-gravity conditions. They used a closed-type resonator and measured the volumes of liquid nitrogen under the micro-gravity conditions while parabolic flights were conducted. The loudspeaker was driven by a swept sound, and the response of the electrical impedance was analyzed by using FFT to obtain the Helmholtz resonance frequency. The authors calculated the liquid volume from the resonant frequencies. The measured volumes were compared with the true volumes of liquid nitrogen and the data obtained in 2004.
