Résumé

In regions with limited access to the grid electricity and expensive backup, solar cold storage (SCS) is a preferred choice for preserving the agro-produce of rural farmers. Many of the existing commercially available solar micro cold storage (SMCS) in India utilize synthetic refrigerants such as R-134a, R-404A, R-407C, and R-410A. These need to be phased out due to environmental concerns. This paper presents the experimental results of R-290-based SMCS deployed with a radiant condenser and evaporator with an integrated ice bank. The SCS is designed to maintain indoor temperature between 3 to 6oC, in ambient up to 43oC. SCS maintained the desired indoor temperature with total power consumption below 0.74 kW while delivering a cooling capacity of 1.76 kW. Cooling COP recorded was in the range of 2.23 to 3.25. The SCS with a storage volume of 5.7 m3 is observed to consume 6.5 kWh/day on the day with ambient temperature varying between 27.2 to 43.4oC.
