Résumé

This paper deals with a charge minimization study of a small capacity brine to water geothermal heat pump working with propane, of around 2.5kW of heating capacity. The objective of the work was the development of a prototype with less than 150g in order to fulfill the regulation for household appliances for propane. A first prototype was initially built with components with minimal internal volume in order to reduce the refrigerant charge as much as possible. However, this first prototype was not able to reach the targeted charge. The prototype was then modified with four closing valves and the charge distribution was studied. Results obtained led to the conclusion that the compressor was the key component in which the refrigerant charge should be minimized. Therefore, the quantity of oil should be reduced to the minimum required to ensure reliability of the compressor operation, as well as the volume of the suction accumulator.
