Modélisation de l’instabilité des oscillations de Taconis.

Unsteady modeling of Taconis oscillations.

Résumé

Spontaneous Taconis oscillations can appear inside tubes penetrating cryogenic tanks. These phenomena represent instabilities of acoustic modes under large thermal gradients. Besides inducing vibrations, Taconis oscillations also lead to large heat leaks, increasing boil-off losses of liquid cryogens. This can become a concern for actively developed systems to store clean and renewable liquid hydrogen fuel. In this study, a computationally efficient model is constructed to predict unsteady evolution of Taconis oscillations and associated heat leaks. The presented example cases include cooldown of a short narrow tube in a helium dewar and a large tube in a hydrogen storage tank. The reported results illustrate time-dependent acoustic pressure magnitudes, oscillation frequencies, spot temperatures, and thermoacoustic heat leaks, as well as spatial distributions of acoustic amplitudes, acoustic power, and temperature profiles in limit-cycle regimes. The developed model can help designers and operators of cryogenic systems prevent or control thermoacoustic instabilities and heat leaks.
