Résumé

The interest in thermally driven cooling cycles has been continuously increasing with the growing availability of natural gas. Absorption chillers present long lifetime and good part-load performance, in addition to the use of ecologically sound refrigerants. The limited coefficient of performance (COP), which is typically below 1.0, the high initial cost and the significant weight, however, tend to offset the aforementioned advantages in favor of vapor-compression chillers. Desiccant assisted evaporative systems are also CFC free and thermally driven, but its application has been predominantly to air-conditioning systems, with few efforts regarding refrigeration applications. However, analyzing the psychrometric chart at sea level, it can be observed that the air-vapor mixture allow for below zero temperatures, for very low levels of absolute humidity. Accordingly, it is possible to devise a freezing cycle using air as a refrigerant, provided such low values of absolute humidity are achieved. Since solid desiccants have great affinity to water vapor, it is proposed the use of two desiccant wheels in series to accomplish that task. In particular, a thermally activated freezing cycle might be appealing for applications located in remote regions with low availability of electric power, such as the fishing industry in the north of Brazil.
