Résumé
Cold rooms primarily preserve the products in bulk at low temperatures. Product crates arrangement inside the cold room affects air distribution, resulting in non-uniform cooling. The return air towards the cooling unit generates a secondary flow which results in the entrainment effect in ceiling mounted cooling unit. This entrainment effect contributes to temperature variations inside the cold room. To address this challenge, an induced duct arrangement made of plywood is installed in the rear end wall of cold room to reduce the impact of secondary airflow and enhance cooling consistency. Experiments are conducted in a medium-sized cold room (81.58m3) with and without duct arrangement. The temperature variations are recorded for 40 h. Velocity and temperature are recorded at 126 and 27 locations in three horizontal planes inside the cold room. A cooling unit equipped with four axial flow fans having an average velocity of 4.2 m/s is used in the study. Water bottles are used as heat load to mimic the perishable products. The temperature inside the cold room was maintained at 2 ◦C. The average velocity heterogeneity index of 31.15 % is observed in the top plane, which is the maximum among all three planes investigated, followed by 13.38 % in the middle and 8.22 % in the bottom plane. It is seen that the duct reduces temperature inhomogeneity by 60.15 % while reduction in HCT is recorded in the range of 2.27 % to 9.9 % in the front end of the cold room. The findings demonstrate that the duct enhanced the cooling uniformity.
