Résumé

This article brings into focus the problems created by microbial infestations in cooling water systems and the control procedures evolved to combat them. Further, the future strategies being evolved in view of environmental concerns with biocides currently used are also discussed. The article covers: microbial problems, microbial growths, structure of microorganisms, metabolism, energy and nutrient requirements, microbial damage, biofouling, macrofouling, biofilm formation, aerobic, anaerobic and pitting corrosion, microbial control with oxidizing and nonoxidizing biocides as well as copper salts and biocide application plans, new strategies using biodispersants and enzymes, and finally discusses future options, such as ozone and cooling tower design and operation.
