Résumé

Insulated containers used for the transport of heat-sensitive health products are made with various insulation materials. The insulation is mainly selected for its performance, e.g. polyurethane, or for its price, e.g. expanded polystyrene. Insulation under vacuum is a new technology introduced in many applications: aeronautics, marine, building, refrigeration equipments, and insulated packaging, etc. The study is the continuity of first comparative analysis between vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) and rigid polyurethane panels. The analysis is based on thermal performance tests conducted on polyurethane and VIP boxes. In theory, the thermal conductivity of VIPs is 5 times lower than that of polyurethane, but the real ratio does not exceed 3 because of various thermal bridges. VIPs allow autonomy of 240 hours. VIPs have made significant advances during the last several years with the introduction of better core fillers and improved barrier films. This promising technology must be improved in order to increase VIP’s performance and reduce its cost.
