Résumé
Perlite vacuum insulation with perlite particles that are milled after expansion and are underlying atmospheric pressure has recently been presented to the public under the name of BluRoX for household refrigerators. In this work the insulation performance of this material at liquid nitrogen (LIN) temperatures is investigated.
A prototype of a pipe insulation using evacuated perlite and a vacuum-tight barrier consisting of a metallic pipe-shaped vessel and a high barrier film on the outside has been built and investigated. Thermal losses through the material in the temperature range from ambient to LIN temperatures are determined on the prototype insulation by measuring the boil-off rate of LIN and the freezing / melting time of water. Dependency of insulation performance on internal gas pressure is considered.
A model for the temperature dependency of thermal conductivity for the material over the entire temperature range is established and aligned with the measurement results. Durability of the insulation system, including the high barrier film maintaining the vacuum level is analysed by measurement of gas uptake rates in combination with porous characteristics of the evacuated perlite.
Potential application fields of such perlite vacuum insulated pipes and vessels are discussed.
