Résumé

Hydrocarbons (HC) are attracting more and more interest as refrigerants in heat pumps and refrigeration equipment as a result of the need to phase out synthetic fluids. For the heat pump market, most of the focus is on propane (R290). However, isobutane (R600a) has been used for a long time in domestic refrigeration and has proved to have good properties, giving good performance to the systems. In this study, we investigate the advantages and disadvantages of using R600a as compared to R290 are analyzed and discussed. The analysis shows that using R600a, with lower vapor pressure and slightly lower flammability limit, may result in a slightly smaller charge for a given capacity while the allowable charge in a given room size is slightly higher. The system efficiency in terms of COP can be expected to be similar to that of R290 systems, while compressor swept volume flows must be increased considerably.
