Résumé

The aim of the project is to develop a magnetic heat pump prototype with a heating power of 8 kW and an efficiency that beats the one of a standard heat pump based on the conventional compressor technology. In the article several problems are addressed, which relate to the manufacturability of the porous magnetocaloric wheel and the selection of an appropriate working fluid. At present, for this application, the best magnetocaloric materials show limits in the quality of their mechanical properties. They don't allow porous structures in form of micro channels or periodic wavy structures, respectively honeycombs, etc. Such structures present the best solutions for high heat transfer rates and low fluid friction losses. A compromise is the design of a wheel, which contains micro tubes with packed and layered magnetocaloric material particles surrounding them. By this a substantially reduced heat transfer surface demands now a replacement of the previously considered 20% ethanol-water solution by a (harmless) liquid metal alloy. With this solution an enhanced heat transfer coefficient compensates the reduction of the heat transfer surface. A comprehensive analysis on the efficiency and other operation parameters of a magnetic heat pump was made in order to obtain optimal design and operation characteristics. The main results are shown and discussed in detail.
