Résumé
Appliances account for 35 to 40% of total energy consumption in the residential sector. In developing countries such as India, the number of appliances is expected to increase in the future because of the anticipated improvement of per capita disposable income and the population growth. This paper is aimed at contrasting the technical energy savings potential of traditional appliances currently available in the market against improved energy efficient appliances. An analysis is also provided regarding the expected evolution of the ownership rate of appliances for the period ranging from 2011 to 2031. The appliances considered in this study are explicitly taken into account by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency and the energy labeling scheme implemented by the Government of India. It is concluded that the adoption and effective implications of energy efficient appliances in the residential sector require a standard model that guarantees that all appliances meet a minimum level of energy efficiency.
