Résumé

The continued operation of ageing assets in an environment of increasing process complexity, regulatory scrutiny, and performance expectations results in escalating challenges managing Process Safety. Ageing, as defined by the UK Health and Safety Executive, encompasses not just the passage of time, but the progressive degradation of equipment, the evolution of operating conditions, and the drift in processes and procedures away from original design intent. If unaddressed, this phenomenon threatens the technical integrity and process safety performance of an asset, increasing the likelihood of major accident hazards. Managing assets integrity in such conditions requires a shift in mindset and at the core of this is continuously evolving Hazard and Effects Management Process (HEMP). Evidence suggests that traditional mitigation measures are no longer sufficient; instead, vigilance must be embedded into the asset operational philosophy. This includes but is not limited to a proactive culture of risk awareness, continuous reassessment of controls, and periodic reset of safety baselines to account for new threats emerging from both physical degradation and systemic drift. This will ensure that assets avoid entering a state where frantic, reactive measures become the norm rather than the exception. As many operating facilities worldwide as we know age, extending their operational lifespans beyond the original design life, this phenomenon is not just timely, it is essential to explore how ageing assets remain safe, compliant, and fit for the future.
